Actress Kerry Washington didn’t look like herself on the cover of the April 4 issue of Adweek. Posing for a story about her upcoming HBO movie, Confirmation, Kerry’s face was given a Photoshop treatment that raised many an eyebrow. In a very thoughtful Instagram post, the actress wrote about the moment she saw the cover: “I just felt weary. It felt strange to look at a picture of myself that is so different from what I look like when I look in the mirror. It’s an unfortunate feeling.”
Kerry elaborated on her feelings during a Q&A at a taping for the next season of SuperSoul Sessions. Although making it clear that Photoshop is a common and accepted tool in her line of work, she says, “I was very taken aback and very uncomfortable about looking at an image that I did not recognize as myself. … In a way, to be honest, I felt like that is not okay with me because that echoes that little girl who thought I wasn’t enough, and I know that I’m enough.”
Here, Kerry shares her true thoughts about the controversial cover.
