As founder and executive chairman of Nasty Gal, Sophia Amoruso is the creative visionary, modern-day entrepreneur and fashion doyenne who has forged an unprecedented path in building a brand. Named by Forbes as “Fashion’s New Phenom,” Sophia has become one of the most prominent figures in retail and a cultural icon.
At only 31 years old, Sophia has worked from the ground up and landed on top of a fashion empire named Nasty Gal— a term originally coined after a 1975 Betty Davis album and the funk-soul singer’s outspoken and unapologetically sexy style. Building on that inspiration, Sophia’s Nasty Gal first sparked a cult following in her one-woman vintage venture on eBay where she quickly learned she had a knack and photographer’s eye for fashion, styling and buying. In just five years (and after being kicked off the site in 2008), the brand has grown into a one-stop shop and online retail haven with a progressive following of fashion risk-takers and well over a hundred million dollars in revenue. Today, Sophia’s bold style is synonymous with six-inch platforms, motorcycle jackets, rock tees, shredded denim and an occasional red lip— all elements of the fashion retailer’s intrinsic personal taste.
Sophia released the paperback edition of her New York Times 18-week best-seller #GIRLBOSS on September 29th, 2015. Offering insights on entrepreneurship and career advice, #GIRLBOSS is a sassy and irreverent look into how Sophia organically grew her business from the ground up. It was recently announced that Sophia has teamed up with Charlize Theron to Executive Produce the #GIRLBOSS comedy series with Kay Cannon. The Netflix series is currently in development.
On October 22, 2015 Sophia launched her first podcast, #GIRLBOSS Radio, with Slate and Panoply. During each episode, Sophia interviews world-class “Girlbosses” who have made their mark in creative, cultural and business ventures to extract solid advice from the lessons they’ve learned.
On October 4, 2016 Sophia will release her second book, NASTY GALAXY, a highly graphic and visual book that embodies the collective spirit of the Nasty Gal brand, Sophia’s own personal brand, and #GIRLBOSSES everywhere. Sophia’s new life bible for young women will approach fashion and lifestyle in the same way #GIRLBOSS approached business—unconventionally, by turning the traditional coffee table book on its head.
Having caught the attention of Silicon Valley, The New York Times poetically put it, “if ever there were a Cinderella of tech, Sophia Sophia might be it.” With relentless obsession over all things web and social media, Sophia has propelled her brand’s unforgettable aesthetic on every channel including nearly 1.3 million followers on Facebook and 2 million followers on Instagram.
On the heels of Nasty Gal’s success, Sophia is passionate about evolving her brand and team of creative mavericks in every way possible. As she continues to be deeply involved in every aspect of the business, she loves most to meet the girls that have inspired Nasty Gal to be one of the most coveted brands of our time.
