Jack Canfield started out his career as a history teacher at an all-black high school in the inner city of Chicago. He soon became more interested in how to motivate his students to believe in themselves and their ability to learn and succeed in life than he was in teaching history. He was so successful in this that he was soon asked to start training other teachers in self-esteem development and achievement motivation.
After returning to graduate school to work on a doctorate in education, he read the book, Life After Life by Dr. Raymond Moody, which focused on near-death experiences. Jack was struck by the fact that when they reached the other side, many people were asked the following two questions: “What wisdom did you learn in your life?” and “How have you expanded your capacity to love?” As an educator, he realized then that no one was teaching for what he termed “the final exam.” That led him on a spiritual quest. He studied everything he could find about how to help people lead meaningful, fulfilling, loving and successful lives, which he then shared in workshops, trainings, online courses, and books, including Self-Esteem in the Classroom, the Chicken Soup for the Soul® series, The Success Principles™, and The 30-Day Sobriety Solution, as well as through appearances in movies like The Secret. He also later founded the Transformational Leadership Council—a professional association for the leading teachers of transformation.
