Carole Bayer Sager and her ex-husband, music legend Burt Bacharach, wrote 13 hit songs together, including the number one worldwide smash hit “That’s What Friends Are For.” Performed by Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Gladys Knight and Dionne Warwick, the song broke global sales records and won two Grammys in 1986.

“To me, a great record, sometimes, is when it just keeps lifting you higher than you thought you could be,” Carole says. “And then you’re just…you’re there. You’re just there. And it’s so much more than what you wrote. It’s so much more than the song.”

Here, Carole reveals what Elton John had to say about the song before it was released, and tells the beautiful story behind the hit that still touches people so deeply.
